MEDIA RELEASE: Special recognition for Victoria’s young carers

Today, the contributions of some of Victoria’s young carers were recognised by Carers Victoria with the awarding of Young Carer Scholarships with an awards ceremony held at the Rendezvous Hotel in Melbourne.

Following the ceremony, attendees visited the “Beings” exhibition at ACMI in Federation Square. This year the Program was proudly supported thanks to the generosity of the Collie Foundation.

For many young people, the idea of having carer responsibility is not considered part of their daily lives. However, that is not the case for over 62,000 young carers in Victoria who are playing that critical role in their families.

Carers Victoria’s CEO, Ms Judith Abbott said, “Currently, 1 in 11 carers in Victoria are under 25 years old. In this figure we estimate approximately 12% are caring for more than one person.”

“Under our Young Carer Scholarship Program these remarkable young carers have the opportunity to apply for up to $500 to participate in activities, buy school equipment, arrange driving lessons or a special personal item that they otherwise may not be able to buy,” she said.

This year approximately 144 young carers will receive a Scholarship, a significant increase on the 115 awarded last year.

Ms Abbott said, “What many people don’t realise is how many people are young carers. Available data suggests that on average, there are one to two in every Australian classroom who combine their studies with supporting a parent, a sibling or someone else who may have a disability, mental illness, chronic health concerns or aged related conditions.

“It can be a really tough balance to strike – particularly when you’re a young person who is trying to balance school, caring responsibilities and all the things that go with building your tribe and finding your own identity.

“The Carers Victoria Young Carer Scholarship program gives some of those young carers the chance to engage in school or community-based activities that may otherwise be out of their reach.”

“We encourage carers across Victoria to join Carers Victoria. Membership is free and provides access to a range of information and assistance that can really help people in their caring roles,” said Ms Abbott.
