Celeste's Story

"Thank you Celeste, keep being the remarkable you."

Meet Celeste, Young Carer Scholarship 2024 recipient who turns to sports as an outlet when her caring responsibilities become overwhelming.

Celeste cares for her brother Jack who lives with an intellectual disability, ADHD, ASD and a genomic sequencing disorder by helping him with daily activities when her mum and dad are unable to.  This can involve and is not limited to organising his meals, making sure he is being safe on the internet, checking he has taken his tablets, calming him down when he gets upset or too loud, and organising his school bag with his lunch.

As a young carer to a sibling with intellectual disability, it can be challenging living with Jack, who has difficulty controlling his volume or when he cannot help but interrupt Celeste when she is trying to concentrate on completing her homework or revision. Having personal privacy seems to be rare in her household, which makes it difficult to have friends sleep over or hang out.

Despite these challenges, Celeste still finds time to play games with Jack so that he doesn’t feel lonely.

Celeste tells us the Young Carer Scholarship will allow her to participate in her chosen sports of tennis, netball and gym, which are activities that help to calm her, as well as make her feel more confident.

It is amazing to see the maturity displayed by Celeste at her age.  With such maturity, no doubt her future will be bright!

Did you know there is at least 1 young carer in every classroom?
