Meet our newest Board Member - Jill Gleeson

Jill Gleeson was appointed to the Carers Victoria board in November 2024. Jill brings extensive governance and clinical experience, which will strengthen the Board’s overall capacity and complement the skills and expertise of continuing directors.

Why did you join the Carers Victoria Board, and what do you bring?

I joined Carers Victoria Board because I am passionate about championing those who selflessly care for and support others. Carers often carry incredible responsibility, and I recognise the profound impact caring roles can have across all stages of life—on individuals, families, and communities.

As a healthcare executive I bring a wealth of leadership experience with expertise in risk management, corporate and clinical governance. I have a strong commitment to advocacy, and an understanding of the challenges carers face. My goal is to help amplify carer voices, ensure they receive the recognition and support they deserve, and contribute to building a more compassionate, inclusive society.

Can you tell us a bit about your experience as a carer?

As an adult, I’ve come to realise that I took on a caring role for my mother as a child, supporting her through her mental health struggles. This early experience shaped my path, leading me to become a registered nurse, primarily working in oncology and palliative care. As my parents aged, my caring responsibilities evolved, giving me a deep understanding of the challenges individuals and families face—juggling life, a career and the needs of aging loved ones, all while striving to maintain their own wellbeing.

What do you see as some key opportunities to improve the lives of Victoria’s carers?

We can improve the lives of Victoria’s carers by recognising and valuing their vital contributions to our society. A key opportunity lies in better integrating caring responsibilities with other aspects of life, ensuring carers are supported to balance their roles with personal, professional, and social priorities.
