2026 Victorian State Election

Carers Victoria Stakeholder Kit

How you can help us make a difference

Carers Victoria is committed to continuing to advance understanding of Victoria’s unpaid carers and improving their access to assistance across the state – regardless of who they are, where they live, or who they care for.

The Carers Victoria platform sets out five point plan to address key pressure points experienced by carers:

  1. Reduce the cost of caring
  2. More funded assistance and respite
  3. Intervene earlier
  4. Expand local supports and connections
  5. Recognise and include carers

Through your networks, you can help us connect with carers, government, sector, employers, schools and the entire Victorian community to achieve a different and better future for Victorian carers where they feel recognised, included and supported.

We have developed a collection of resources to help you advocate for change and help us make sure that unpaid carers can not be ignored in the election.

Awareness

Over three-quarters of a million Victorians are unpaid carers.

They’re everyday people who provide  unpaid care and support to family members or friends with a disability, mental illness, substance addiction, chronic health issue or an older person with care needs. They’re parents, children, partners, other relatives and friends who assist with a variety of daily activities.

There’s at least a 1 in 10 chance that you are, know or will be a carer. Join Carers Victoria to make sure that Carers Count in this year’s state election!

Carers Count 2026: Help shape the future of support this election year

Unpaid carers are the backbone of Victoria’s healthcare system, providing essential care that saves the state billions of dollars every year. Yet despite this massive contribution, many carers feel invisible, exhausted, and under-supported.

To change this, Carers Victoria has launched Carers Count 2026, a landmark advocacy campaign leading up to the next Victorian State Election.

The goal of the campaign is simple: to ensure that every political candidate and party commits to tangible, long-term support for the state’s 750,000+ unpaid carers.

Carers Victoria is pushing for systemic change, focusing on sustainable funding for respite care, improved access to local supports, and better recognition of the financial sacrifices carers make.

Why your voice matters

This campaign is built on the belief that those who provide care are the experts in what needs to change. By sharing your lived experience, you help illustrate the real-world impact of policy gaps — whether it’s the difficulty of navigating service systems or the struggle to balance work and care. Your stories provide the evidence needed to demand better services and fairer treatment from the next term of government.

How to get involved

Carers Victoria is inviting all carers to join the movement. You can support the "Carers Count 2026" campaign by:

  • Reading our Pre-election Policy Platform: available to download from our website
  • Speaking to candidates in your electorate: Use our online tool to find out who to get in touch with, and what to say
