Carer inclusive language Short course (microlearning)

This short introductory course explores carer inclusive language and what to avoid. Interactive learning activities throughout provide an opportunity to check your existing knowledge and expand your thinking.

You will learn about appropriate language to use when referring to carers and the caring role.

Why do the course? Carer inclusive language is essential because it ensures unpaid carers are recognised, respected and supported. Carers tell us that when considered language is used, they are more likely to engage.

Who is the course for? Staff across the health, community, public and education sectors who are new to working with carers or are seeking to refresh their knowledge.

Please note that this content will not be new to participants of the ‘Becoming carer aware’ online workshop 2025. However, you are encouraged to complete this course to consolidate your learning.

Hear what others have said to decide if it is for you.

“Language and how we use language changes all the time. It is a really great reminder of how important using correct language empowers carers.”

“I admit I had not thought about this [carer language] in quite this way… Making intentional language choices to describe carers and caring is so important in my role as a support worker.”

How long will it take? Approximately 15 minutes
